EGR121: Engineering Innovation

Overview: Here are the projects that I worked on in my first mechanical engineering class. The purpose of these projects was to develop technical and collaborative skills by participating in 4 design sprints.

Machine Anatomy (Reverse Engineering):

Our team was tasked to disassemble and examine two different alarm clocks. Upon disassembly, our team reported a summary of findings, developed a costed bill of materials and structed assembly, and drew an exploded diagram for each clock.

Quantum Sand Machines (Ideation Process):

Our team was tasked with building a mouse trap car that could traverse a sandy course.

After a rigorous ideation process, our team constructed a car with 2 driving wheels, 1 friction-minimizing guiding wheel, and a foam-cut chassis. A fishing line connected to our mouse trap powered our vehicle.

Happy Meals (Solidworks/3D Printing):
Our team was tasked with designing and 3D printing an injection moldable, safe, low-cost, and sustainable happy meal toy.

Our team chose a March Madness Theme consisting of a catapult (two parts) that could launch a ping pong ball toward a mini hoop (one part). Each team member designed, dimensioned, and toleranced a part in Solidworks. After printing and testing our assembly, our team ensured that our product was injection moldable, developed a manufacturing plan, and performed a cost, sustainability, and market analysis on our toy.

Play Ball! (Electronics & Arduino):

Our team was tasked with creating a loop of 5 "SportsBots" that could pass a golf ball between each other. Each "SportBot" was designed by a smaller sub-team of 3-4 individuals and was required to implement an electronic and Arduino function to move the golf ball.

Our big team chose to theme our SportsBots around a carnival. My sub-team designed a roller coaster SportsBot that used an electronic circuit featuring a photoresistor to trigger an elevator lift and an Arduino that played carnival music as the ball ascended. Once at the top of our roller coaster, the ball would roll down our track, completing a vertical loop before dropping into the next SportsBot.
